Casting

Character Description:
The main character in our music video (Protagonist) is a young girl battling a drug addiction. She resembles characteristics such as the ones we have looked at for inspiration. Mainly the character Effy, who is in the Television series 'Skins', she is also a young 'Druggie'

Calisto Ryder-Dixon

Calisto is 17 and is a student at Reepham College, studying Art, English and Sociology.  We chose her because she has a dramatic character, she also lives close which is useful while filming. Calisto also looks like he girls on our mood board, and we felt that we could make her look even more like them with the costume, props and make-up.

Abbi Chase

Abbi is 18, a student at Reepham College, studying Art, Photography and Media. It would be very easy to use Abbi in our production as she is the other student to the production. Abbi also fit's the criteria of the young girl part that we were looking for and has dark hair like the others on the mood board previously posted.
Nicole Eddy

Nicole is 17, a student at Reepham College studying Media, English Languages and Economics. We chose Nicole for the part of the 'Drug Dealer' because she is the other student in the production, she knows the storyline, what we plan to do and has to be there for the filming, so for a small role she was perfect.

Equipment & Software

For our shooting we will be using a range of equipment. Firstly and most importantly, we will be using a SONY Handycam HDV 108i. This will be the only camera used at all time throughout our shooting. We chose to use a small Handycam as this will allow us the easiest and greatest movement in our filming. We have also had a lot of practice using the camera from last year and know how to use each setting saving us time so we don't have to learn how to use any other camera, making best use of our day of filming.  We also used a Manfrotto tripod to ensure all our shots are level and steady. The tripod is easily maneuverable which will help us to capture the right shots at each location, and we can also easily set the right height.
We will also be using an imac for our editing process and we will be using Final Cut Express and imovie softwares for editing the film. Both are easy to use, accessible and will help us to create the best video possible.
We plan to capture the footage in imovie and then move it to final cut express to do the further editing needed as it is is lightly more advance in what can be achieved in reference to effects. We are also going to use a flashlight app on a Samsung Galaxy X2, it has a strobe setting which we will use to re-create the lighting for a 'Party' atmosphere. This hopefully will also look slightly 'Stop Motion' gaining an effect that we originally wanted to use but didn't have the time for.

Props and Costume For our Music Video

Props
<---Sherbet as a substitute for cocaine. This will be used for the first scene where our girl will snort drugs and fall back onto the bed. It may also be used in a flashback sequence throughout the music video. We want it to look like she will be snorting the drug through a rolled up note or another piece of paper, and we will be shooting this as a close up shot on her face, framing the actions. The picture above is from the music video 'Let you go' by chase and status, showing a shot of the protagonist taking drugs, we want to recreate the same shot and the same sense of false 'Love' for something such as drugs or alcohol.

We will need alcoholic bottles for numerous parts of the video such as the flashbacks of the night before and her bedroom the day after. This will also play on the lyrics of the song, about how her love for this addiction is making her re-do previous mistakes over and over.  Inspiration for adding this came from the music video by Chase and Status-Flashing Lights, in a scene where it is also apparent that alcohol had an influence on mistakes from the previous night. The drink in this scene is in a decanter which we will consider using when choosing the type of drink and what its in. This shot really frames the alcohol and how much it influences the story line from that point onwards.
We will need a mirror to do a shot similar to the one on the left where at one point our protagonist will look into the mirror 'reflecting' on her actions and what happened the night before. We would also like to use a mirror which has a 'rough' old and 'rusty' feel to it, one that isn't perfect, to compliment the character of the girl.
Costume

Ripped tights and a black skirt- we felt that this was the best option for the girls character as its as if she doesn't have the money for new tights, the tights also show a resemblance to a 'ripped' life and a fragile character. The black theme was inspired by the character Effy from the TV series 'Skins' as shown below she is wearing a similar outfit to the one we plan to use, she has also come from a slightly broken background, uses drugs and has a troubled life.
The colour black also symbolises darkness, which is a trait that our girl has, a certain mystery about her life and why she is the way she is.

Scouting For Girls-Elvis Ain't Dead

When thinking about our cuts for our music video, we chose a similar band to You are the Empire, and how they have cut their video keeping with the timing of the music. We listened to the first 45 seconds of the song, where there were 21 cuts in the editing where the shot has changed, to a different angle or scene.

How are youth cultures represented in Quadrophenia?

Youth culture is when young adults (teenagers) are represented as a class or subculture. It also refers to a group who follow a way of life that is different from others, who follow the same practices and share the same values, such as music, dress and manners, they have a collective identity. Teenagers became a common term used by advertisers and merchandisers in the 1940s so they could sell products to this specific age group (13-19) and class. The two youth cultures represented in the 1979 film Quadrophenia were the Mods and the Rockers.

The film itself is about these two youth cultures that were around in the mid sixties, the film leads up to the roits in 1964 on May bank holiday between the two groups in Brighton, that caused a major uproar at the time. The story follows the life of a boy called Jimmy who was part of the Mod's collective identity. The story itself comes from the album Quadrophenia written by The Who, of which the story line is based around each song in chronological order.

The dvd's cover shows jimmy in the foreground of the cover, he looks lost and as if he has no sense of place. He is separated from the rest of the Mod group who are in the standing confident in background in blue who are together as if a union also representing this 'collective identity', whereas jimmy is seen in black also showing a lack of 'fitting in'. The colour theme of the cover is red, white and blue which resembles the British flag, at the time the group were patriotic and the film shows a very British way of life. A slogan on the cover reads 'A way of Life' suggesting that this culture wasn't a hobby or something to be taken lightly, it was a way of living and each belief represented who you were, you were either a Mod or a Rocker. " I don't wanna be the same as everybody else. That's why i'm a Mod, see? I mean, you gotta be somebody, aint ya, or you might as well jump in the sea and drown." This was said by the character Jimmy in the film and correlates to how these two youth cultures were the way teenagers lived, you were either one or the other there wasn't another choice. The title of the film is split into two parts 'Quad' means four and shows the four personalities that Jimmy represents in the film for someone of his age and time, Jimmy was part of a family, he had a job, he was part of the Mod's and his life before becoming part of this culture.

I looked at the first few minutes of the film in detail from 1:00-3:00 minutes. This sequence shows the character Jimmy riding his scooter through the streets at night on his way to a dance where he meets his other friends. The camera starts with a tracking shot in front of the bike showing his surroundings, the camera is tracking his way of life and the way he thinks, acts and behaves. The camera moves in to a close up shot of his face, he is shown to appear extremely happy with life and where he's headed. This goes hand in hand with the lyrics of the song, preaching to the doctor saying 'Can you see the real me, doctor?' suggesting that this is the way he is and the rest of society can't understand and think he's going crazy. The rockers soon appear from behind Jimmy in the darkness, leaving only lighting from the headlights of their motor bikes, Jimmy's shows two front headlights which could represent the two youth cultures.

Society believes that bad things happen at night, in the dark and as the rockers came out from the darkness this shows that Jimmy see's them as a bad thing and shows the first signs of this rivalry that carry's through the film. The only lighting while the shots of Jimmy happen are from the street lights and light from the headlights of cars and motor bikes. Whereas the lighting in the dance club is set up, representing a sense of security for Jimmy when he arrives, that this is where the Mods are and is where he belongs. This also shows that he is unsafe alone in the dark against the rockers. When Jimmy arrives at the club he buys drugs of a friend, they are expensive showing that there was money around at this time for young people, and that drugs weren't hard to get hold of, that anyone in this group could gain access to them.

Youth Culture has been represented negatively throughout the film showing youths to be aggressive, loud and follow bad values such as drugs and smoking. Although i feel that the audience can sympathies with the character Jimmy as he feels he has no other choice than to be part of this Mod culture and follows only what has been left for him to believe in. As his home life falls apart, his job and everything else he is left only with this culture and being part of it makes him have a sense of self worth and that he has a family to belong to. The film does show both the Rockers and Mods to have 'terrorised' the communities at the time with their way of life but shows the audience that there were no other options for the teens as they grew up and this is how society had portrayed them to appear. I feel that although all opinions lead to a negative representation of youth culture throughout the film, that because of the character Jimmy it shows how other aspects of these teens lives were affecting the way they were seen in the media, tainting the way we also see them in the film.

The Bowery Boys

The Bowery boys were a gang based north of the Five Points district of New York City in the mid 19th century. Their views were based on rebelling against what was expected of them as younger men (teenagers) and started their own views, style and interests as a group such as being anti-Catholic and anti-Irish. Their style dressed them in black stovepipe hats, red shirts, black flared trousers, high-heeled calfskin boots and black vests, with oil slicked hair which gave them a second name as 'Soaplocks'.

<-- This is a fight between The Bowery Boys and the Dead Rabbits in the Sixth Ward, New York City. The group was made from mostly single males who frequented the saloons and brothels of the Bowery.

YOU ARE THE EMPIRE

You Are The Empire are an alternative rock band from north Norfolk created earlier this year,2013, The band consists of 4 members all of which study A Levels in Norfolk. The band is composed of Sam Jenkins (Drums), Ed Richardson (Bass guitar), Stokely Howard (Electric guitar and backing vocals) and Dan Holmes (Vocals and rhythm guitar).
The band create their own music, currently they have four recorded songs that are up on youtube and are in the process of writing new material.
In keeping with their style of music they are styled with an alternative look such as buttoned up shirts and slim jeans. Below is their synopsis of the song Love Diamonds.
"Love Diamonds, a stereotypical love song, meaning those little things that is unique in every relationship that makes it special and individual from others. Every relationship has them."

Don’t you say, I love you again
We’re like a box love diamonds
You play the game, on my heart

I feel the pain, I’m not insane
You spinning wires round my heart
You disappear, in front of me
And never come back for me again

You took my love last night
Was it wrong or right
All I want is for your love diamonds X 2

I miss your laugh and your eyes
When they looked deep down into mine
It will rain, when we kiss
And I’ll make my only wish
I want to play, on the strings
Of your mind and of your heart
Its hurts inside, I’m petrified
Stars are floating around my eyes

You took my love last night
Was it wrong or right
All I want is for your love diamonds X 2

You took my love last night
Was it wrong or right
All I want is for your love diamonds X 2
These lyrics are talking about a love song, about someone who is confused by what they want in the relationship and is toying with the idea of whether it should carry on.

Digipak's

A digipak's style is like book or gatefold, made from paperboard or card, and with one or more plastic trays that would typically hold a CD or DVD.

Since Digipaks were among the first alternatives to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, and because there is no other common name for Digipak-style packaging made by other companies, the term digipak or Digi-Pak. Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak (DVDigipak) is used as a premium package for DVDs and DVD sets.

IMPAC Group, Inc. originally owned the Digipak trademark. That company was acquired by MeadWestvaco (MWV) in 2000 and folded into its AGI Media division. Following this acquisition, the Digipak name and designs were licensed to manufacturers around the world. MWV sold AGI Media to Atlas Holdings in 2010. In 2012, Atlas purchased Shorewood Packaging from International Paper and merged the two companies to create AGI-Shorewood.

Audience Profile Research Task

Foster the People

Foster the People are an American Indie Pop band formed in Los Angeles, California in 2009. The group is composed of Mark Foster (vocals, keyboards, piano, synthesizers, guitar, programming, percussion), Cubbie Fink (bass and backing vocals), and Mark Pontius (drums, percussion). The group's music is often described as melodic dance-infused pop and rock, so spans many genres making it difficult to catagorize them.

Mark Foster founded the band in 2009 after spending several years in Los Angeles as a struggling musician and working as a commercial jingle writer. After Foster's song "Pumped up Kicks" became a viral success in 2010, the group received a record deal from Startime International and gained a fan base through small club shows and appearances at the music festivals Coachella and South by Southwest in America

After releasing their debut album Torches in May 2011, "Pumped Up Kicks" became a crossover hit on commercial radio in mid-2011, reaching number one on Billboard'Alternative Songs chart, number three on the Rock Songs chart, and number three on the Billboard Hot 100, while charting on the Adult Top 40 and Mainstream Top 40 charts. The group received two Grammy Award nominations for Torches and "Pumped Up Kicks".

This is one of Foster the People's posters, it's a powerful image and defiantly shows how the band see themselves and how they want to promote their image. It's a relaxed setting and has a warm wash of colour over the top and for the poster background.

The Black Keys
The Black Keys are an American indie rock band that formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001. The duo consists of Dan Auerbach on guitar and vocals and Patrick Carney on drums, their first few albums were self produced and recorded in basements, forming a raw blues rock sound. They are now recognised over the world for having a garage/indie rock sound.

This is their single 'Tighten Up' from the album 'Brothers', released in 2010 which was their commercial break through album, which also won 3 Grammy awards. Followed by 'El Camino' in 2011 which lead to their first arena tour and another 3 Grammy awards including one for the hit single 'Lonely Boy' from the album.

This is a picture of their website which is still promoting their album 'El Camino'. The website has merchandise, tour dates, news about the band, photos and videos.

This is the album artwork for 'Brothers' its simple but shows comic character and promotes the bands image further. The wording suggests that they aren't interested in gimmicks or clever slogans but just want their audience to listen to the music.

"The simpler the beat, the better," - Patrick Carney

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire are an American indie rock band based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The members consist of husband and wife Win Butler and Regine Chassagne and also Will Butler, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury, Jeremy Gara and Sarah Neufeld.

This is their video for The Suburbs, off their third studio album, ‘The Suburbs’ which was released in 2010 and won a Brit Award the year after for Best International Album.

This is a photograph of the band, they are seen to be wearing alternative clothing which is all dark colours apart from a stereotypical indie denim jacket. The men in the group have long hair or stylish hair cuts and the women are seen to have had little styling done unlike a stereotypical pop artist who would be covered in make-up and other accessories.

This is a screen shot of their website which holds all their information such as, news about the band, social networking links and promotes their latest album. The website is almost all in black and white suggesting that their style is alternative and plain, also that its not about fancy details but just about good music.

Favourite Music Video

I love this video for Rudimental's single 'Waiting all night' because its a true story. It's an emotional video but it also compliments the music well.
